Alexander von Liezen-Mayer (in Hungarian - Liezen-Mayer Sándor) was born in 1839 in Győr, and died in 1898 in Munich. He was an important Austrian-German painter. He attended the Academy of Painting in Vienna and the Munich Academy. After 1862 he studied in the atelier of Carl Theodor von Piloty, which he left in 1867 as a respected portraitist. In 1870, he moved to Vienna, where he painted a portrait of Franz Josef I. and the members of the Kaiser’s family as well as other members of contemporary aristocracy. In 1872, he returned to Munich and in 1880 he became the director of Art School in Stuttgart but after 3 years he returned to Munich where he lived and stayed as a professor of portrait painting at the Academy of Arts until his death.
