Životopis

František Jiroudek was born in 1914, and died in 1991 in Prague. He studied at the Prague Academy of Fine Arts under professor W. Nowak. He declared his affiliation to the group titled Seven in October – named after the month when the first exhibition took place – that is October 1939. Jiroudek participated in the group’s exhibitions after 1940 and in 1941, Jiroudek becomes a member of Mánes, an association of visual artists and in 1961 he becomes a professor of the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague. In the early day of his work, Jiroudek mainly painted portraits, nudities, figural compositions and landscapes. Most of his works were smaller or medium sized formats. In 1937, three of his school works were selected for an exhibition of young students’ paintings in Naples. During the WWII, he was designing the scenes and costumes for the theatre in Ostrava, painting pictures from the world of drama and theatre often themed with dramatic tragedies that mirrored the contemporary atmosphere of the world war. In summer 1946, for the first time, Jiroudek travelled with a group of painters to Paris. After the war, he dedicated his time to landscapes, figural and monumental and monumental paintings as well as illustrations. After 1954, he found ‘his’ landscape around the village of Libechov. His attachment to the wine-making region was reflected also in his drawings with the brush – illustrations to the book Colas Breugnon by R. Rolland. Jiroudek’s contribution lies in expressive release of the canon of the modern Czech landscape painting. Paintings of František Jiroudek are represented in the Czech Museum of Fine Arts in Prague, in the National Gallery in Prague, the Hermitage in St. Petersburg, the Town Hall in the Danish city of Lyngby, Gallery of Art in Toronto and in regional galleries across Slovakia. Stable exposition of Jiroudek’s works was displayed in the state castle of Mělník. Bibliography: Berka, Čestmír. František Jiroudek. Praha : Odeon, 1980. (Umělecké profily).
