T o r n a y i Gyula was born in 1861 in Hrhov and died in 1928 in Budapest. This important Hungarian painter first studied in Vienna and Munich at the Academy of Fine Arts and continued his studies under professor Ludwig von Löfftz. In 1883, he enrolled to the Benczúr’s painting school. After travelling and studying in exotic countries (India, Japan, Africa) he painted oriental themes as well as figural compositions and still life paintings. He regularly participated in exhibitions at home (Kunsthalle, National Salon) and after 1904 also abroad (Paris, London). Some of his works found their way into the collections of the National Gallery in Budapest.
